When Carmelina comes to Rome, she takes a gamble on a disastrous wedding feast and finds herself working in the powerful household of Rodrigo Borgia. However, that sentiment was short-lived, as The Serpent and the Pearl exerted just as strong a hold as Quinn’s earlier novels – subjecting me to a sucker punch in the stomach when I turned the last page and realized that I would have to wait for the next installment to see the characters escape their predicaments.Ĭarmelina is on the run from a shadowy past – but she has two things to stand her in good stead: her stock of recipes, and the favor of Santa Marta, patron saint of cooks. Admittedly, when I heard that Kate Quinn’s latest novel was set not in the classical world but rather in Renaissance Italy, I was a bit disappointed.

There are a lot of troubling things about Esther, but also some really fascinating things. On Mother’s Day, we had just finished the book of Esther, so I was hopeful. Rather than preaching topically, this football pastor had decided that the entire church (which may not be fully of mega-church size, but is by no means small) would read through the Bible together in a year, like you do, and he would pull the sermons from our reading assignments. That just happens to be something about which I tend to get pissed off at churches. In fact, this book brings up a couple of stories I have about churches, so I should probably say as a disclaimer that Gaudy Night is not religious at all in its topic, but deals mostly with the role of women in society. I say all of this because the ultimate falling-out I had with the pastor of that church reflects the central conflict of the great and wonderful mystery story, Gaudy Night, so I’m going to use this review as a venue to air my grievances, which will hopefully be entertaining enough that you can bear with me. Sometimes it’s better to go with what you know, even if it’s very little. When I say it now it doesn’t sound like a very good idea, but I did a lot of things at that time that sound stupid now. A couple of years ago I thought (as a gesture to God saying something like, “Hey, we don’t disagree about everything and anyway what do I know about life?”) that I would start going to a certain church where the pastor was an ex-football star. Our heroine is of mixed race, half French- half Filipino, adding a much needed shot of diversity in the romance category. Some of them evaluate the theoretical models used to understand the inner workings of ancient agrarian economies, while others explore rural economies, the forces of regeneration and degeneration in particular regions, the settlement histories of different areas, and the exploitation of depopulated land in Judah and Idumea. The essays focus on particular issues in the economy of ancient Judah and its neighbors during the late monarchy and the Neo-Babylonian, Persian, and Hellenistic periods. The essays in this volume address this gap from a multidisciplinary perspective, involving archeology, biblical studies, economics, epigraphy, ancient history, Jewish studies, and theology. The dynamics of ancient Judah’s economy are among the most important, but also neglected and least understood, aspects of ancient Israel’s history. The Haunting of Maddy Clare is a 2012 Berkley publication. Very good! I didn't notice that this was a Christian Fiction. I also really liked that the two characters were already dating when the story started, so there weren't a lot of distracting zings of early attraction. The mystery was well plotted, layered, and difficult to guess the end of. No one ever dreamed there were several dozen girls in the basement.) The scenario was very realistic I actually knew someone from an average middle-class neighborhood who was only one street over from a major trafficking ring that got busted while I lived there (and the only thing the neighbors noticed amiss was that the family had regular company who often played their car music a little loud. Now I can hardly wait to grab the other two books of the series and devour them, especially after I read the synopses on them!! I really enjoyed the author's style and felt she really nailed the idea of Atlanta, since I lived there for three and a half years. It took me only a couple chapters to connect with these characters.
